How dynamic QR codes work—from scan to editable destination
Understand the redirect layer behind an editable QR code, what can be measured, and how to test a code before printing.
Reviewed September 1, 2026 · Practical product guidanceThe short answer
A static QR code stores the final content inside the pattern. A dynamic QR code normally stores a short managed URL. When someone scans it, that URL records the visit and redirects the browser to the current destination. Because the printed pattern points to the managed URL, the owner can change the final destination without changing the pattern.
What happens during a scan
The phone reads the QR pattern, opens the managed address, and receives a redirect to the destination saved for that campaign. A well-run redirect should be fast, use HTTPS, and remain stable for the life of the printed material.
The redirect can also create aggregate scan records such as timestamp, general country, device category, and referrer information. Those records describe the handoff. They do not prove that the visitor bought, booked, submitted a form, or left a review.
- Printed QR pattern: permanent for that managed address
- Saved destination: editable by the campaign owner
- Scan report: measures access to the redirect
- Destination analytics: measures the outcome after the redirect
When dynamic is worth the dependency
Dynamic QR codes are most useful when the physical item may outlive its destination, when a reprint is expensive, or when scan reporting changes a business decision. Menus, packaging, property signs, instruction sheets, event schedules, and rotating promotions are common examples.
If the destination is permanent and reporting is unnecessary, a static QR may be the cleaner choice. It has no redirect-service dependency. Choosing static in that situation is not a downgrade; it is appropriate risk control.
A print-safe test sequence
Generate the code, scan it from more than one phone, and test on cellular data as well as Wi-Fi. Print a proof at the smallest intended size and scan it under realistic lighting. Then change the dynamic destination and repeat the test. Keep a record of the campaign name, final artwork, and owner recovery method before approving a production run.
Answers before you print
Can a dynamic QR destination be changed after printing?
Yes. The printed code continues opening the managed redirect, while the owner changes the destination behind that redirect.
Does a dynamic QR code require internet access?
Opening a web destination requires connectivity. The phone can read the pattern offline, but the redirect and final page need a network connection.
Do scan totals equal customers?
No. One person can scan more than once, and a scan does not confirm the action taken on the destination page.
